Growing Targeted Industries in Florida's State Capital
As the state capital, the City of Tallahassee, FL, has a dynamic economy, a growing population, and a wealth of world-class scientific R&D resources, including the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. The Tallahassee-Leon County Office of Economic Vitality (OEV) commissioned Camoin Associates to identify targeted industries and develop recommendations to facilitate the growth of these industries and their respective workforces. Camoin partnered with Business Cluster Development, of Palo Alto, CA, to include additional expertise in innovation.
Looks at the demographic, industry, and workforce trends, providing a comprehensive base understanding of the region’s economy that led to the identification of the targeted industries and strategic recommendations.
Incubator & Accelerator Analysis
Analyzed entrepreneurial support systems, identified important resource gaps, and recommended specific actions to strengthen entrepreneurship. It identified opportunities for growth in the innovation economy, with a specific focus on idea generation and commercialization connected to the research labs at Innovation Park.
Targeted Cluster Analysis
Provided a “deep dive” on high-growth sectors in the Tallahassee-Leon County region that are highly competitive and should be a focus on the OEV’s expansion, retention, and recruitment efforts. The analysis encompassed data research, interviews, and industry/market trends research, and concluded with concrete steps to support the growth of four industries: Applied Sciences and Innovation, Manufacturing & Transportation/Logistics, Professional Services & Information Tech, and Health Care.
A Magnetic Technologies Task Force was formed while the study was still under development. It is a public/private partnership, supported by OEV and including researchers and businesses with the goals of facilitating technology transfer from the R&D at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory and promoting Tallahassee-Leon County as the “Magnetic Capital of the World.” Camoin Associates has been retained to provide ongoing advice and assistance to this project.
